I change my patterns most years, always trying to better last seasons flies. I have developed most of my flies from experience, trying to add fine touches to well known patterns.
My most recent patterns are Scooby Snakes, a variant of the Snake Fly, utilising Scoobies Strands, They come in a wide range of colours and appear to be more hard wearing than the traditional mylar bodied snake flies. The additonal cone head give the fly weight, allowing it to cut through the water.
I recently purchased this signed box of Falkus flies, as seen in Falkus & Buller's book Freshwater Fishing. I haven't used them yet, they are too nice! but im proud to own them, and be able to show them to you all.
I hope the flies below will give you some ideas for the seasons ahead.

Scooby Tube This is a simple fly to tie, as it is a basic tube dressing, utilising a Scoobie Strand. Again Blue & Black! |
Lumi Killer Snake This pattern takes on my favourite colours, blue & black. The dressing is as above, substituting red scooby for blue. Diawl Mawr - BigDevil Red Scooby Body over Snake Mount Arctic Fox Wing/throat - Black/Red Jungle Cock eyes. Elver Snake This is a variant of Ransome's famous Elver Fly. Tied with Blue Mylar Body over aSnake Fly Mount. Vulturine Guinea Wing, JungleCock eyes, red thread. The feathers are pricey but make an effective wing. Lumi Killer Snake 2 This pattern, replaces the conehead with a Lumibead. The beads can be charged with a standard torch or preferably a UV Torch. The faint light emission does have a postive effect! |
Halsam Variant A striped down version of the famous Haslam, a good Dyfi Fly. This patterns has a Red butt and a blue tinged body. It still hads the Macaw in the wing, which in this case is brown fox. |
These patterns are variations of Shrimp Flies. Tied with modern colouration and materials. Predomanently for Salmon, these flies have served me well. The Blue Version, courtesy of Gerry Nealy is a cracking pattern for both Salmon & Sea Trout. -
Wilkinson Shrimp Tube This incipid tube was developed after a days fishing on the Tywi with fellow angler Colin Chapman. Colin had 3 fish in successive casts with a bright tube in coloured water, this fly was developed to fish in the daytime in colured water, preferably behind a fast sinking line. |

A very Sparsely tied fly. The Nickel finish of the Partridge Salar Double means that no tinsel body is required. Simple but very effective. A good dropper pattern.
Silver Stoat Variant.
The Stoat series are a must, my box is full of patterns based on this classic. Here I have used a Blue Galina throat and Jungle Cock eyes to give the fly a little twist!
Alexandra
Again a very traditional pattern, the distinctive peacock wing giving the fly its distinctive appearance.
This variant utilises Jungle Cock and Crystal hair. The red in the wing is dyed crow!
Magenta Bumble
From the stable of TC Kingsmill Moore.
Ths bumble pattern is really bright, and fishes well in coloured water.
Secret Weapon
One of many Secret Weapon patterns in my box. The treble stops the 'nipping' of fish. This is an ideal pattern for tipping with Maggots
