There are fantastic chapters on flies, including meticulous dressings, and more importantly when and where to fish the pattern. The ubiquitous chapters on tackle selection are included and written in a way that will give the novice an informed insight into the art of Sea Trout fishing. The chapter on 'Things of the Night' will touch a nerve in those anglers who ply their art at night, and ends with some damn good advise on how to calm the nervesand protect yourself from thr dark!!!! Further chapters cover all aspects of Fly fishing for sea trout including tube flies, doubles & trebles, snakes, tidal fishing, lochs, small fry and surface lures! All in all this is a fantastic book, an great insight into Sea Trout Fishing. Highly recommended 9 out of 10

More than anything else this book is written with enthusiasm and an obvious love of his sport. Jim brings the pages to life with his humour and knowledge. The real test for a book in my mind is the 'put down factor' and The Sea Trout and the Fly is a book that simply cant be put down, as Jim takes you with him on trips to lochs and rivers. |
I met James Waltham 'Jim' in late 2005, after being introduced by a mutual friend Sid Knight. We met for the first time at a fly tying demonstration by Karl Humphreys in Whitchurch. There is something about Jim that makes him instantly likeable, he has a friendly nature and one hell of a sense of humour. This is reflected in his book 'The Sea Trout and the fly'. Following on from Jim's earlier book 'Sea Trout Flies' the book takes the reader on a magical, often hilarious journey into the world of Sea Trout Fishing. |

At just 145 grams the Backwinder Sea Trout is probably the lightest fly reels on the market, and it has to be the best looking reel around. The Sea Trout reel is a true large arbour.
As well as being suited to freshwater fishing it has the benefit of being 100% saltwater resistant. Every detail within the reel has obviously been painstakingly planned it would appear that nothing was left to chance when the reel was desgined. The looks and material used help to make this reel a design masterpiece.
The reel is not equipped with a drag system, but relies on an overrun brake system that works both when retrieving line and when playing a fish. The reel may not be suited to the novice angler, however learning to play a fish with the hand, is a skill that all anglers should master, relying on touch and feel rather than a mechanical drag system. Fishing this way may result in you landing more fish, and avoid being broke by a powerful first run with a poorly set drag. The Backwinder Sea Trout is definately a hands on reel!
The manufacturing on this reel is second to none, the bearings allow for a very smooth and very fast rate of line retrieval, it has a super smooth feel to it.
If you are are attracted to design and aesthetics then look no further, the reel is gorgeous, plus it is soundly made, and offers great line retrieval speed. However the reel wont suit everyone, especially those who play fish on the reel, utilising a drag, something that this reel does not offer. But if you want a hands on reel, that you control then this reel has to be considered. As with everything I would suggest having a look before you buy, but looking at this reel will leave you wanting for more!
