Although Snake Flies have been around for some time now, they were are relatively unheard of in Angling Circles. However these flies have made a massive impact to my angling in recent seasons, and have resulted in improved catches.

In 2004 I had seven fish in a hour with a snake pattern, whilst other anglers on the same beat struggled.

The original patterns were tied using a 'snipped' hook eye and monofilament mount, these are still used, however the modern way of tying utilises braid.

Snake flies are extremely versatile, they can be fished slightly sub-surface with a floating line, fished deeper with a sink tip or intermediate, or even close to the bottom with a fast sinker. Waking versions are also available.

Similar in length to Falkus's sunk lure, but far more flexible in the body. These are a must in any serious anglers fly box, and their appeal is now spreading world wide.

The images on the snake fly page show a selection of of Ian's Flies, but the great thing with the snake fly, is that the majority of traditional patterns can be adapted to a snake, or you could design your own, the only limitations are your imagination and the mylar body colour.

All round these have to be one of the most successful Sea Trout and Salmon patterns available.

You will not find these patterns in fishing tackle shops, they are all hand tied in the UK
