Tackle selection is usually decided by personal preference and budget. For the angler who is new to Sea Trout Fishing, typical trout fishing tackle can be used, (see Starting Out page).

As the angler gains experience he/she may decide to look for tackle which is suited to Fly Fishing for Sea Trout. The below are items that I use for my angling and items that I would recommend. This is by no means a definitive range of tackle, there are other products on the market, but these products are excellent and come highly recommended.

For over 90 years fly fishing anglers around the world have come to know Cortland products for their exceptional quality and long lasting durability. For 2006, Cortland expands on its commitment to you with technology leading fly fishing products designed to provide you with the greatest opportunity for success in virtually every fly fishing situation that you'll encounter.
At Sage, every piece of angling equipment made is designed, tested and hand built with one goal in mind: Maximum fishability. It's a term Sage came up with a few years back to describe the kind of performance that helps you cast better, fish more effectively and have more fun. In short, every Sage rod is specifically designed to help you make the most of your precious time on the water.

I use the Sage RPL and the Sage VPS, both of these rods have now been superceeded by modern versions. The Sage XP is a favourite amongst Sea Trout anglers in the UK.

Sage are not the cheapest rod on the market, however you will be pruchasing a high quality product which come with a lifetime (original owner) warranty. This means that one rod should last a lifetime, this makes it a far cheaper product than expected.

I broke both of my sage rods in 2004 and the service that I received was of the highest level.

At present this is one of my favourite reels on the market, The Lamson Litespeed, For Sea Trout try the LS3 or LS3.5

Waterworks acquired Lamson® in October of '98 and are continuing the tradition of manufacturing high quality reels at an excellent value. Their first innovation under the Lamson name is called Litespeed™. The new Lamson Litespeed is a true large arbor reel with the same fully-sealed drag system that is used in the Waterworks ULA. The Litespeed is machined in the U.S. from barstock aluminum. By utilizing a more traditional structural design and foregoing the use of titanium we are able to offer a very fine, high performance large arbor reel at a value you would expect from Lamson.

Litespeed is also available in hard type 3 anodize finish which we call the Guide finish; and in a beautiful dark grey type 2 anodize finish called Smoke.

444SL GHOST TIP

The 15’ Ghost Tip section gives the angler 24’ (with a 9’ leader) between the green SL fly line body and his fly. Ideal for use with small tubes and tradtitional sea trout flies. The Ghost Tip could be the most perfect fly line ever developed for the line-shy trout, Sea Trout and salmon. Taper: WF / FI, Weights: 4-10 Length: 35 yards, Color: Mint Green,15’ clear tip.

This line was recommended to me by Steffan Jones. Initially the line took some getting used to, however this is common with a dual density line.

I use this line insteadof Polytips and have found it excellent to use. It helped me catch some lovely fish on the Dyfi in 2005.
